Stadio Giovanni Corbelli is a multi-use stadium in Palermo, Sicily, Italy. It is currently used mostly for football matches and is the home stadium of Palermo. The stadium was built in 1930, and renovated in 2007. The stadium has a total capacity of 19,000 and has an official capacity of 9,955.
History
The stadium was inaugurated on 25 May 1930, as the home stadium of Palermo.
The stadium underwent an ambitious renovation in 2006, which left the stadium with a capacity of 13,390 seats. The renovation work, carried out by Protti S.p.A., also included a complete relaying of the pitch, a new lighting system, and the introduction of a new sponsorship agreement, with G4S, that would take over the naming of the stadium.
The plan included a new bench and the introduction of goalposts in a semicircular configuration, similar to that of the Olympic Stadium in Berlin.
International matches
Stadio Giovanni Corbelli has hosted two FIFA World Cup qualification matches. It was the first European venue to host a qualification match in which Spain and Italy faced off for qualification to the 1994 World Cup, Spain winning 4-0. It was also the first European venue to host a qualification match in which a team from an OFC country, in this case New Zealand, faced an AFC country. The match was part of New Zealand's qualification campaign for the 1998 World Cup.
